Mayo Clinic plastic surgery resident Sebastian Winocour, M.D., has won first prize for Best Clinical Research Presentation at the Midwestern Association of Plastic Surgeons  annual meeting in Chicago.
Dr. Winocour presented findings of a Mayo surgical quality improvement study aimed at preventing the death of skin on the breast, called breast skin necrosis, after mastectomy with breast reconstruction. Necrosis can resolve on its own or require reoperation, another breast reconstruction surgery and/or a different reconstruction method.
As part of the study, surgeons were informed of their rates of breast skin necrosis and those with high rates were encouraged to make changes to better prevent necrosis. The effort significantly reduced necrosis in nipple-sparing mastectomy.  More research is under way to identify factors behind the improved outcomes.
