Mayo Research Leader Honored for Diabetes Work


Robert Rizza, M.D., will be honored by the American Diabetes Association for his scientific contributions to the field. He will receive the Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement in ceremonies in June. The Banting Medal is named for Sir Frederick Banting, the Canadian Nobel laureate and co-discoverer of insulin as a diabetes therapy. Dr. Rizza was selected for this highest ADA science award for his research contributions, specifically the understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of diabetes. Dr. Rizza is a former president of the ADA, as well as Executive Dean of Research at Mayo and former Chair of Endocrinology. The Banting Medal will be presented at the ADA 2010 National Achievement Awards event in Orlando.
