Stem cells show therapeutic hope for chronic lung rejection
Stem cells show potential to safely slow progression of organ rejection in some lung transplant recipients, according to early Mayo Clinic research. This discovery offers hope of one day providing a cellular therapeutic to extend the lives of patients who would not qualify for a second lung transplant after organ rejection. The research team of […]

Research highlights from Florida – fruitful in 2019
By Advancing the Science contributor
Florida sunshine doesn’t just contribute to big, juicy oranges. In 2019, Florida was a hotbed of growth for Mayo Clinic Research, with 11.8% more funding leading to new capabilities such as ex vivo perfusion for lungs – leading to more available for transplant, and carbon ion therapy for cancer – currently not available to patients in the U.S. Read on for more on these and other practice transforming activities.

Research breathes new air into donor lungs
By Advancing the Science contributor
By Sara Nick Four hundred: That’s the number of U.S. patients who die each year awaiting a lung transplant, or are removed from the wait list when they become too ill. Now, cutting-edge research underway on Mayo Clinic’s Florida campus aims to save as many of those lives as possible. “We’re hoping to wipe out […]

Increasing the Odds Mayo Clinic performs more transplants than any other organization in the country. That experience allows Mayo Clinic scientist-physicians to study stem cells and personalize drugs to fight organ rejection and increase the number of viable lungs. Immune-Building Stem Cell Research In the 1970s, when Cesar A. Keller, M.D., started his career in […]
